Tips for Every Room in your House being Green

There are so many things a person can do to help make their house more “green friendly”.  When you’re retired there is more time to put into the house and yard which makes it easier to create a more environmentally friendly atmosphere. There’s so many ways to turn your house green that it’s hard to keep track, but this 8 minute video, led by 6 Minute Style host Susan Doherty, leads you through every room in the house – and even the yard and car – to show you what you can do to make where you live greener.

Some of the main things Susan said that you want to remember to keep your house and yard more environmentally friendly are as follows…

  • Make sure you get your house checked to make sure your windows and insulation are giving you the most for your money and keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • Unplug appliances when you aren’t using them or try plugging a lot of appliances into a power strip, and then just turn off the strip when you leave the house.
  • Change our your regular light bulbs for compact florescent bulbs
  • Eat locally; support your local farmers market
  • Try using plastic wattle bottles less; get a filtration system on your refrigerator instead.
  • Get a low flow shower head and low flow toilet
  • Do laundry back to back to help with efficiency. It takes a long time to heat up the dryer.
  • Take down your empty roof rack on your car; it decreases your horsepower and uses up more gas and money.
